Montfort Junior School English | Narrative Causality: Replace “And Then” With Cause → Decision → Consequence

Young writers often connect events with “and then” because sequence is easier to see than causality. A stronger narrative shows why one event produces the next: pressure creates a decision, the decision creates a consequence, and the consequence changes the story state.

This page uses Montfort Junior School only as the school-family context named in the preserved 2019 URL. Its reader job is narrative causality: replace “and then” with Cause → Decision → Consequence.

The old page contained historic Yishun/Punggol centre, tutor, telephone and generic syllabus claims. Those are not carried forward. eduKate Singapore is an independent tuition provider and is not affiliated with Montfort Junior School, MOE or SEAB.

Sequence Is Not Yet Story Logic

He went outside. Then he saw a wallet. Then he picked it up. Then he ran.

The reader knows what happened, but not why the final action follows. A stronger version explains the relationships among the events.

The Causal Spine

Setup → pressure → trigger → decision → consequence → resolution.

This spine keeps the composition moving because each stage changes the next one.

Cause

Ask what creates the problem or pressure.

Decision

A character’s decision is the hinge between what happens to them and what they do next. Strong stories make this choice visible.

Consequence

The decision should change the world of the story. A consequence may solve the problem, worsen it, reveal information or create a new obligation.

Weak sequenceStronger causal relation
Then she called her mother.Because the gate was locked, she called her mother for help.
Then he ran home.Realising the envelope was missing, he ran home to search for it.
Then they argued. When neither would admit the mistake, the disagreement escalated.

Replace “And Then” by Asking “Why Now?”

  1. Read the next event.
  2. Ask why it happens now.
  3. Identify the trigger.
  4. Add the relationship only if needed.

The writer does not need a connector in every sentence. The causal logic can also be shown through action and reaction.

Motive Should Match Available Information

A character cannot make a decision based on information they do not yet know. Track what each character knows before deciding what they would reasonably do.

The Consequence Must Be Earned

An ending should follow from the earlier decisions. Avoid resolutions that appear from nowhere merely to finish the composition quickly.

A Causality Diagnostic

Observed patternLikely issue

How a 3-Pax Class Trains Causality

In a maximum three-student group, learners can receive the same event sequence and propose different causal links. The tutor can test which link is supported by the story state and which requires invented information.

Current MOE English Context

The MOE Primary English Language Syllabus 2020 develops writing as coherent and purposeful communication. Narrative causality strengthens coherence because events are connected by meaningful relationships rather than sequence alone.
