Literal Does Not Mean Easy
Literal questions can still require careful reference tracking, vocabulary or sequence. The key distinction is that the answer itself is stated rather than inferred.
Inference Must Stay Bounded
Inference follows:
clue + clue → reasonable conclusion.
Students should ask what the evidence does not prove so plausible guesses do not become overconfident answers.
Evidence Questions Reverse the Direction
Instead of asking “What can I conclude?”, an evidence question asks “Which detail proves or supports this conclusion?” The student starts from the claim and searches for the strongest relevant support.

- Build the answer contract.
- Check whether the final response matches the question family.

Why Students Confuse Inference and Evidence
The same text may support both. An inference asks for the conclusion; an evidence question asks for the support. Teach the child to state whether the answer should be a claim or a clue.

After learning inference, some students begin inferring everywhere. If the text states the answer clearly, use the direct information and do not add unnecessary interpretation.
