Yishun Primary 4 English Tutor | Paragraph Coherence: Every Sentence Needs a Job

A paragraph can contain grammatically correct sentences and still feel weak because the sentences do not work together. Primary 4 writing becomes stronger when every sentence has a job: introduce, explain, show cause, add evidence, change the situation, or complete the paragraph’s purpose.

This preserved 2019 Yishun tutor URL is rebuilt around one reader job: paragraph coherence—every sentence needs a job. It is not a duplicate Primary 4 tutor landing page.

Historic tutor, telephone and centre claims from the old page are not carried forward. Families should verify current class location, tutor and timetable through current eduKate information. eduKate Singapore is an independent tuition provider and is not affiliated with MOE, SEAB or any school.

A Paragraph Is More Than Several Sentences

A paragraph usually has one dominant job. In narrative writing it may build tension, show a decision, describe a consequence or resolve an event. In informational writing it may explain a reason, give examples or show contrast.

Individual sentences should contribute to that job.

The Sentence-Job Test

After each sentence, ask:

If the student cannot answer, the sentence may be filler.

Common Sentence Jobs in Narrative Paragraphs

Sentence jobExample function
Set stateShows where character is and what is happening
Add pressureIntroduces difficulty or urgency
Reveal reactionShows how character responds
Trigger actionCauses the next event
Show consequenceExplains what changed because of the action

Common Sentence Jobs in Informational Paragraphs

Students should learn that sentence purpose depends on paragraph purpose.

Coherence Begins With a Paragraph Plan

Before writing, the child can state the paragraph job in a few words:

This gives the paragraph a direction before sentences are generated.

Use the Deletion Test

Remove one sentence. Does the paragraph still perform the same job?

The deletion test teaches students that writing quality includes selective removal.

Use the Order Test

Rearrange the sentences. Which order makes the relationship easiest to follow?

Coherence often depends more on order than on vocabulary difficulty.

Reference Creates Cohesion

Pronouns and repeated key nouns help sentences connect. But ambiguous pronouns can destroy coherence.

Sometimes repeating the noun is clearer than using another pronoun.

Connectors Must Express Real Relationships

A connector should not be inserted simply to make the writing “sound better”. It should make the relationship visible.

Vocabulary Should Serve the Paragraph Job

If the paragraph’s job is to build urgency, verbs and details should support urgency. Decorative vocabulary that does not affect the reader’s understanding can weaken coherence by distracting from the main movement.

Dialogue Needs a Job Too

Dialogue should:

If dialogue can be deleted with no effect, it may be ornamental rather than functional.

A Coherence Revision Order

  1. State the paragraph job.
  2. Check sentence order.
  3. Delete repetition.
  4. Add missing cause/evidence/bridge.
  5. Check reference.
  6. Check connectors.
  7. Then polish grammar, punctuation and spelling.

This keeps meaning above surface correction.

How a 3-Pax Class Trains Coherence

In a maximum three-student group, learners can arrange the same set of sentences into a coherent paragraph and defend their order. The tutor can ask what job each sentence performs and which sentence could be deleted.

Current MOE English Context

The MOE Primary English Language Syllabus 2020 develops students’ ability to communicate meaning clearly in writing. Paragraph coherence is a practical bridge between sentence-level grammar and whole-text writing control.
