Primary 3 comprehension becomes much more reliable when the child stops jumping straight from the question to a guess. A stronger routine has three steps: identify the question anchor, locate the evidence, then build the inference only if the question requires one.

Step One: Find the Question Anchor

The anchor is the person, event, idea, sentence or relationship that the question is actually about.

Without an anchor, students often reread the entire passage or choose a nearby fact simply because it feels relevant.

Step Two: Locate the Evidence

Evidence may be direct or distributed across several nearby sentences.

The student should first search near the anchor and widen only if needed.

Step Three: Infer Only When Necessary

Some questions ask for literal information. Others require the student to combine clues into a supported conclusion. The child should not infer merely because a question feels difficult.

  5. Write a complete response.

Why Students Skip the Anchor

The repair is not “read carefully” in the abstract. It is to make the anchor a visible first step.

Why Students Skip the Evidence

Some students read the passage, remember the general story and answer from memory. This can work on simple questions and fail on precision questions.

Why Students Over-Infer

A plausible story can feel convincing. But comprehension answers need textual support.

Use the Nearest-Sufficient-Evidence Rule

Start with the smallest passage region that can answer the question. If one sentence is insufficient, widen to the next sentence or paragraph.

This reduces global rereading and helps Primary 3 students build efficient evidence habits before upper Primary texts become longer.
