Scientific vocabulary is necessary, but not sufficient
Students need to know the correct terms and use them in the correct context. A keyword dropped into an incomplete sentence does not show full understanding.
We teach what the term means, how it connects to the concept and how it should appear inside an explanation.
Build complete explanations
A strong structured answer often includes:
- the relevant evidence or observation;
- the correct scientific concept;
- the mechanism or causal relationship; and
- a conclusion that answers the question directly.
Students learn to check whether one of these links is missing.
Avoid memorised sentences without understanding
Model answers are useful for showing precision. They become harmful when a student tries to force the same sentence into every question.
We therefore vary context and wording so students must reconstruct the explanation from understanding.
Reading the question precisely
Students also lose marks by answering a nearby question rather than the actual one. We teach them to identify the command, the evidence supplied and the exact relationship they are being asked to explain.
From P3 to PSLE
In Primary 3 and 4, the focus is accurate terms and simple explanations. In Primary 5, students need greater transfer. By Primary 6, they should be able to combine vocabulary, evidence and reasoning under examination conditions.
What progress looks like
- more precise scientific language;
- fewer vague or incomplete answers;
- better use of evidence;
- stronger causal explanations;
- less dependence on memorised model sentences; and
- greater independence in mixed PSLE questions.
