There is no single “best” Primary Science tuition centre for every child in Singapore. The more useful question is whether a programme can identify what a particular student needs and improve it.

Start with diagnosis

A low Science mark may come from missing knowledge, misconceptions, vague language, weak evidence use, poor diagram interpretation, incomplete open-ended answers or difficulty transferring a concept to a new context.

A useful programme should be able to distinguish these causes before prescribing more practice.

Concept mastery matters more than keyword collection

Students need accurate scientific terms, but they also need to understand the relationships behind them. A keyword without mechanism is usually not enough.

Open-ended answers should reveal reasoning

Students should learn to connect observation, evidence, concept, mechanism and conclusion. This gives them a repeatable reasoning structure without turning the answer into a memorised script.

Experiments, tables and graphs belong inside Science tuition

Students need to identify variables, controls, trends and justified conclusions. They should also understand the difference between what evidence shows and what they expect based on prior knowledge.

Small-group tuition should still be individual

A small group is useful only when the tutor still notices which student has which misconception. Students can benefit from discussion and comparison, but feedback must remain specific.

PSLE preparation should become selective

Near PSLE, revision should focus on recurring weaknesses, not simply more volume. Weak topics are repaired, then tested again inside mixed questions so the student has to recognise the relevant Science independently.

How parents can judge progress

• fewer repeated misconceptions;
• more precise scientific vocabulary;
• better use of evidence;
• stronger open-ended explanations;
• better interpretation of experiments and diagrams; and
• greater independence in mixed papers.

Be cautious of guaranteed grades, fixed mark improvements or claims that one programme is automatically best for every learner.
