Science tuition becomes much more useful when the tutor knows not only that an answer is wrong, but why it is wrong. The student may have a misconception, use the wrong evidence, omit a causal link or understand the concept but express it too vaguely.

Ask students to explain before correcting them
When a student explains the reasoning, the tutor can see where the chain first becomes unreliable. That is often more useful than simply marking the final sentence wrong.
Different mistakes need different feedback
- Concept error: rebuild the scientific idea.
- Evidence error: return to what the question actually shows.
- Language error: improve precision without changing the underlying idea.
- Structure error: add the missing causal link.
- Transfer error: vary the context so the student must recognise the concept independently.
Corrections should not become copying
A corrected answer is useful when the student can explain why the revised version is better. Otherwise, the exercise becomes transcription rather than learning.
Use the next question as a test
After correction, we change the context. If the student can apply the repaired idea in a new question, the feedback has produced something transferable.
Why small groups can help
Students can hear different explanations, compare approaches and learn from one another’s errors. But the tutor must still know which misconception belongs to which learner.
The value of a small group is therefore not only social interaction. It is better visibility into student thinking.
Near PSLE
Feedback becomes increasingly selective. We prioritise recurring misconceptions, incomplete open-ended answers, weak evidence use and question types that continue to cause avoidable marks.
What progress looks like
- better self-correction;
- fewer repeated misconceptions;
- more precise explanations;
- better use of evidence;
- stronger transfer after correction; and
- less dependence on tutor prompts.
