The Hidden Problem: Paragraphs That Repeat Instead of Move
A student may write three paragraphs about being worried without changing the situation. Another may describe the setting repeatedly because there is no clear next event. The writing is not empty, but the story is not advancing.
We teach students to label the purpose of each paragraph before drafting:
- establish the ordinary situation;
- introduce the problem;
- increase pressure;
- show a decision;
- reveal a consequence;
- slow down the turning point; or
- resolve what has changed.
If two paragraphs have exactly the same job, one may need to be cut or changed.
Why Three Students Helps Structure Become Concrete
Three students can produce three different plans from the same prompt. Comparing those plans helps each learner see that structure is a set of choices, not a hidden answer known only by the tutor.
- Which plan reaches the problem too slowly?
- Which plan has no consequence?

Students learn to avoid paragraphs that begin nowhere and end nowhere.
Sentence Control Supports Paragraph Control
- keep tense stable;
- make pronoun reference clear;
- use connectors only when the relationship is real;
- vary sentence length according to pace;
- avoid repeating the same sentence opening; and
- remove lines that restate what the reader already knows.

The Fencing Method for Paragraph Purpose
When a full composition is too demanding, students may write only three linked paragraphs: problem, decision, consequence. The task is deliberately narrow so the movement between paragraphs becomes visible.
Once that structure is controlled, the fence moves outward and the student adds opening, development, richer detail and a complete resolution.
Revision: Ask What Each Paragraph Does
- Can I name the job of this paragraph?
- Does it change the situation?
- Does it repeat an earlier point?
- Does it contain a detail that belongs somewhere else?
- Would the story improve if this paragraph were shorter?
These questions turn revision into structural thinking.
