The first student understood the problem but copied 42 as 24. The second student used an incorrect relationship from the beginning. On the paper, both may look like “one mark lost”. In teaching terms, they are completely different events.

- Can the student explain the idea?
- Can the student begin without a prompt?
- Can the student recognise the same structure in a different question?
- Can the student retrieve the idea after time has passed?
- Can the student detect and correct a mistake independently?
If the answer is no, more pages may simply repeat the same unstable state.
Why Three Students Helps Us See the Error Chain
A three-student tutorial gives the tutor access to something large classes often lose: the intermediate steps.
- We can watch the student annotate an English passage.
- We can see whether a Mathematics diagram is built before or after the student has already committed to a method.

In Mathematics, neat working is not merely presentation. It is part of error control.
When a student’s method is visible, the student can audit it. When every operation is compressed into one line, a small error can become difficult to locate and easy to repeat.
- read the wording carefully;
- identify quantities and relationships;
- decide whether a model, diagram, equation or direct method is useful;
- keep units visible;
- write one logical step at a time where necessary;
- estimate before accepting an answer; and
- check whether the final result answers the stated question.
We revisit core areas such as fractions, percentage, ratio, rate, measurement, geometry, data and multi-step problem solving according to the student’s actual gaps. The topic name is less important than the dependency underneath it.
PSLE Science: Evidence Must Connect to Concept
Science answers become stronger when students learn to build a complete reasoning chain.
A student may observe that one setup changes faster than another. That observation is not yet the explanation. The student must identify the relevant variable, apply the correct concept and state the relationship that explains the difference.
- separate observation from explanation;
- identify what is being changed, measured or kept constant;
- read tables and graphs before jumping to a conclusion;
- compare using the same basis;
- link evidence to a scientific idea; and
- use exact language without padding the answer with unrelated facts.
Keywords matter when they carry the concept. They do not earn understanding merely by appearing in the sentence.
Our Error Classification System
We often classify mistakes into a small set of useful families:
- Knowledge error: the concept or rule is missing.
- Recognition error: the student knows the idea but does not recognise when it applies.
- Reading error: a condition, qualifier or relationship is misread.
- Execution error: the method is correct but a step is performed incorrectly.
- Expression error: the student understands but does not communicate enough of the reasoning.
- Organisation error: poor working or paragraph structure causes later failure.
- Time-pressure error: a normally controlled student changes behaviour when the clock becomes salient.
Classification prevents vague correction. “Careless” is only useful after we know what form the carelessness takes.
First Principles Before Shortcuts
Shortcuts are powerful only when the student understands the structure they are shortening.
We therefore teach the underlying relationship before compressing it into a faster routine. In Mathematics, that may mean understanding why an operation preserves equality before relying on a remembered move. In English, it may mean understanding what a connector does between ideas rather than selecting it by sound. In Science, it means understanding the causal mechanism before memorising a sentence pattern.
Clarity first. Compression later.
How a 90-Minute Lesson Is Used
- Retrieval: old material returns briefly to test retention.
- Review: recent schoolwork or a recurring error is inspected.
- Instruction: the underlying idea is taught or retaught.
- Guided attempt: the student applies the idea with support available.
- Independent attempt: prompts are reduced.
- Changed question: the same concept is tested in a new surface form.
- Error analysis: mistakes are classified and corrected.
- Continuation: focused practice is assigned for the next learning need.
The sequence is stable enough to create discipline but flexible enough to respond when new evidence appears.
Repair, Stabilise or Extend?
Repair
For a student already struggling, we find the earliest point of instability and rebuild from there. The immediate school topic still matters, but it cannot be made stable on top of a missing dependency.
Stabilise
For a student who is passing but inconsistent, we reduce variance through retrieval, mixed practice, deliberate checking and clearer decision routines.
Extend
For a student who is already strong, we increase depth: unfamiliar contexts, more exact explanation, alternative methods and questions where the route is not obvious at first glance.
Use the School Paper as Evidence, Not a Verdict
We do not treat one score as the student’s identity. A paper is a sample of performance under particular conditions. It becomes useful when we ask why each mark was lost and whether the same pattern returns elsewhere.
A student who loses five marks to five unrelated slips needs a different intervention from a student who loses five marks because the same conceptual error appears in five questions.
The score is the headline. The error pattern is the article.
What Improvement Looks Like Before the Final Result
- fewer repeated correction types;
- better retention of work taught several weeks earlier;
- cleaner Mathematics working;
- more complete English comprehension answers;
- Science explanations with clearer causal links;
- less dependence on tutor prompts;
- more reliable checking; and
- a smaller gap between the student’s best performance and ordinary performance.
These signals matter because they show the system becoming more dependable.
