Quick answer: change method when the current representation blocks learning—not merely because the task feels difficult
Difficulty can mean several different things.
- The concept is new.
- The student has a missing prerequisite.
- The explanation uses the wrong representation.
- The child needs more retrieval time.
- The task is appropriately challenging.
- The learner is overloaded by too many simultaneous demands.
- The student has misunderstood the instruction.
Only some of these require a different teaching method.
Do not interpret every struggle as evidence that the method failed.

Adaptive teaching should therefore help the learner operate across several language representations—not train one narrow worksheet routine.
First distinguish productive struggle from representation failure
Productive struggle looks like:
- the student is trying plausible strategies;
- each attempt creates new information;
- the child can explain where uncertainty lies;
- progress is slow but visible.
Representation failure looks more like:
- the learner cannot tell what the task means;
- the same unproductive move repeats;
- language itself is blocking access to the concept;
- a diagram, oral explanation or example suddenly makes the relationship visible.
The second state is a stronger reason to change method.
The one-change rule
If the child struggles with a comprehension inference, do not change everything at once.
Possible supports include:
- underline evidence;
- draw a relationship map;
- say the inference aloud;
- compare two candidate claims;
- reduce the sentence complexity.
Choose one.
Observe whether it improves the target capability.
If several supports change at once, we learn less about what actually helped.

Better:

The first statement fixes an identity.
The second describes evidence from a task.
Change representation before changing the learning objective
Suppose a student cannot answer:
Why did the character hesitate before entering the room?
Do not immediately simplify the question to a literal one.
First try:
- identify the relevant sentence;
- say what the character knows;
- say what the character fears;
- connect those two pieces orally;
- then reconstruct the written inference.
The learning objective remains inference.
The route changes.
Comprehension: switch between evidence and claim
Some students can understand a passage orally but struggle to write the answer.
Try:
point to evidence → explain orally → write one sentence → compare with evidence.
This reveals whether the bottleneck is comprehension or written representation.
Grammar: switch from rule statement to contrast
A student may not understand a grammar explanation.
Show a contrast:
- She has finished.
- They have finished.
Ask what changed and what controls the change.
The learner may infer the relationship before receiving formal terminology.
Vocabulary: switch from definition to usage network
A dictionary definition may be accurate but too abstract.
Add:
- example sentence;
- collocation;
- near-synonym;
- opposite;
- register;
- image or context where useful.
The word becomes connected rather than isolated.
Writing: switch from finished model to decision map
A student who struggles with composition may not benefit from another polished model essay.
Try mapping the decisions:
topic → story pressure → character decision → consequence → change.
Now the student sees the architecture without copying the surface language.
Oral: switch from scripted answer to expandable framework
If memorised oral responses sound unnatural, use a lighter structure:
answer → reason → example → qualification.
Then vary the prompt.
The goal is adaptable reasoning, not script reproduction.
Change task size when working memory is overloaded
A full composition may be too large for the current repair.
Temporarily isolate:
- one paragraph;
- one inference;
- one sentence transformation;
- one oral response.
Then reintegrate.
This reduces load without lowering the final standard permanently.
Do not confuse scaffolding with the final method
A story planner helps.
A colour-coded grammar chart helps.
A comprehension evidence box helps.
These are scaffolds.
If the student always needs them, the programme has not yet transferred enough control.
The fade test
- Use the scaffold.
- Remove one part.
- Change the task.
- Wait several days.
- Retest without the scaffold.
If performance remains stable, the scaffold did its job.

- more practice is needed for fluency.
Adaptive teaching also means knowing when not to adapt.
When a prerequisite repair is better than a new method
A student cannot write a coherent paragraph because sentence construction is unstable.
No story-planning method will solve the full problem.
Repair the prerequisite.
Similarly:
- weak vocabulary can block comprehension;
- weak decoding can block reading meaning;
- weak grammar can block written clarity.
Change the underlying capability before changing presentation endlessly.
Parent question: “What exactly changed?”
If a tutor says:
We changed the teaching style.
Ask:
- What failure did you observe?
- What hypothesis did you test?
- What support changed?
- What improved?
- Did it transfer?
- Will the support be faded?
This converts “customised tuition” from marketing language into an inspectable process.

How do we know a new method worked?
