Quick Read: 10 Useful Words Children Can Learn Early

This preserved 2016 eduKate lesson introduces ten words that children may encounter in school, books, news, adult conversation and wider reading. The goal is not to use “big words” for their own sake. A student truly owns a word when they can recognise it, explain it, distinguish it from nearby words and use it naturally in context.

Word Word class Meaning Example
politics noun activities and ideas connected with government, public affairs and the way groups make collective decisions The class discussed how politics can affect decisions about transport and housing.
epitome noun a person or thing that is a perfect example of a particular quality or type Her calm response was the epitome of patience.
meticulous adjective very careful and precise about details He kept meticulous notes while conducting the science experiment.
empathy noun the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings or perspective She showed empathy by listening before offering advice.
ambiguity noun the quality of having more than one possible meaning or interpretation The ambiguity of the message left both teams unsure about the meeting time.
articulate adjective / verb able to express ideas clearly; or to express an idea clearly in words He articulated his reasons clearly during the discussion.
brainstorming noun a process of generating many ideas before selecting or developing them After ten minutes of brainstorming, the group had several possible story openings.
magnanimous adjective generous and forgiving, especially toward a rival or someone less powerful The winner was magnanimous and praised her opponent’s effort.
oxymoron noun a phrase that places apparently contradictory terms together for effect “Deafening silence” is a familiar example of an oxymoron.
innate adjective existing naturally from birth rather than being learned or acquired later Curiosity may feel innate, but good questioning can also be developed through practice.

How to Learn the Ten Words

  1. Read the definition and example.
  2. Say what the word means without looking.
  3. Identify its word class and one nearby word that is not identical in meaning.
  4. Write one original sentence that makes the meaning clear from context.
  5. Return to the word after a few days and retrieve it again without prompting.

Original lesson focus: Top 10 English words used by adults that children should learn as part of a growing vocabulary.

  1. Politics
  2. Epitome
  3. Meticulous
  4. Empathy
  5. Ambiguity
  6. Articulate
  7. Brainstorming
  8. Magnanimous
  9. Oxymoron
  10. Innate

Children understand more of the world when they have words for the ideas they encounter. A wider vocabulary can make conversations, reading and classroom learning more accessible, but depth matters as much as breadth: students should learn how each word behaves in a sentence and when a simpler word would be more precise.
