Quick answer: an activity becomes educational when the learner must notice conditions, follow safety rules, manage emotion, communicate, make decisions, act, receive feedback and carry the lesson into another context. The climbing wall was only the environment; the educational value came from the behaviours it made visible.

What experiential learning actually means
Experiential learning is not simply “learning by doing”. A person can do the same activity repeatedly without becoming more thoughtful. The stronger cycle is:
Experience → observation → interpretation → adjustment → new attempt → transfer.
Reflection is what converts an event into a reusable lesson.
Safety comes before challenge
In a physical activity such as indoor climbing, courage is not ignoring risk. It is acting within clear safety boundaries. Students first need to receive instructions accurately, understand the purpose of equipment and procedures, and know when to stop or ask for help.
- listen before acting;
- check equipment and instructions;
- recognise personal limits;
- communicate uncertainty;
- follow trained venue staff and current safety rules;
- do not convert peer pressure into unsafe behaviour.
This distinction matters beyond sport. Responsible learners do not confuse bravery with recklessness.
Resilience is not endless endurance
The 2015 article celebrated persistence. That remains useful, but resilience needs a more precise definition. Persistence is valuable when the strategy still has a reasonable chance of working. When the approach is failing, resilience may mean resting, changing technique, seeking feedback or choosing a safer route.
A useful learner asks:
- What failed?
- Was it effort, technique, knowledge, fear, fatigue or an unrealistic plan?
- What should I change before the next attempt?
Fear can be information
Fear is not automatically something to defeat. It can signal danger, uncertainty or unfamiliarity. The educational task is to distinguish those possibilities.
- If the risk is real, strengthen safety.
- If the task is unfamiliar, increase knowledge and rehearsal.
- If the learner is capable but anxious, use graded exposure and support.
- If the challenge exceeds current capacity, reduce it rather than force performance.
This creates calibrated confidence rather than empty reassurance.
Teamwork is shared responsibility
Teamwork is not merely being friendly or doing an activity together. A functioning team distributes information, attention and responsibility.
- one person notices something another misses;
- instructions are repeated or clarified when needed;
- members encourage without pressuring;
- people communicate before acting;
- responsibility does not disappear into the group.
These are the same mechanisms students later need in group projects, laboratories, CCAs and professional teams.
Trust should be evidence-based
The original photo captions spoke often about trust. A stronger educational interpretation is that trust grows when people repeatedly perform responsibilities reliably.
Students can ask: Did the person listen? Did they follow the agreed procedure? Did they communicate changes? Did they act consistently? Trust is therefore not blind belief; it is a relationship built from behaviour.
The body gives immediate feedback
Physical activities provide feedback that classroom work often hides. Grip, balance, fatigue, reach and route choice all produce immediate consequences. That makes the relationship between strategy and outcome visible.
A student learns quickly that repeating the same ineffective move harder is not always the answer. Sometimes technique matters more than force. This is directly transferable to academic study.
Transfer to Mathematics
Climbing and Mathematics share a useful abstract structure: identify the current state, inspect constraints, choose a route, execute one step, check the result, and re-plan if necessary.
- Do not commit to a method before reading the problem.
- Break a large problem into reachable intermediate states.
- Preserve working so the route can be checked.
- If progress stops, diagnose rather than repeat blindly.
Transfer to Science
Students can observe forces, friction, balance, motion and the effects of changing body position. The important educational boundary is not to turn every activity into a forced “Science lesson”, but to use genuine observations to ask better questions.
What changed? What stayed the same? Which explanation fits? What evidence would distinguish two explanations? These are scientific habits even outside a laboratory.
Transfer to English and communication
Activities also create material for language learning because students have real events to reconstruct.
- describe a sequence accurately;
- distinguish observation from emotion;
- explain why a decision changed;
- give instructions clearly;
- reflect on what was learned without relying on generic moral statements.
The reflection questions that create transfer
- What happened?
- What did you notice before acting?
- What choice did you make?
- What consequence followed?
- What did another person notice that you missed?
- What would you change on the next attempt?
- Where else could this same lesson be useful?
The seventh question is critical. Without transfer, the lesson may remain trapped inside the climbing gym.
How adults can support without over-controlling
- set non-negotiable safety boundaries;
- allow age-appropriate decisions inside those boundaries;
- ask what the child noticed before giving the answer;
- praise specific process, not vague “bravery”;
- help the child distinguish persistence from unproductive repetition;
- let the learner own the reflection.
What genuine growth looks like
- instructions are received more accurately;
- the student asks for clarification earlier;
- fear is described more precisely;
- strategy changes after feedback;
- team communication improves;
- the learner can explain a safety boundary rather than merely obey it;
- the lesson appears later in a different context.
