Claims, Reasons and Counterexamples: An Argument Workshop

An argument becomes easier to assess when we can see exactly what it asks us to believe and why. A confident tone, an impressive example and a conclusion we already like can all distract us from that task. This workshop slows the process down: identify the claim, reconstruct the reasons, test the connection and decide how the conclusion should change.

The central case is a fictional community reading room considering longer opening hours. The people, figures and operating rules in this guide are invented for learning. They are not findings about a Singapore library or statements of eduKateSingapore policy. You will use the same case several ways, then transfer the method to a different problem.

You need no formal logic background. Bring a willingness to distinguish what a sentence says from what you wish it said. By the end, you should be able to produce a short argument with explicit assumptions, a fair objection and a conclusion proportionate to the evidence.

The proposal we will examine

Imagine this statement at a reading-room meeting: “Our late sessions are popular. Every worthwhile service should be expanded. We should therefore keep the room open for two additional hours every evening.” It sounds like a complete argument, but several parts need work. What counts as popular? Is expansion always the right response? Why every evening, rather than one trial evening? Which other services would lose time or money?

Do not begin by deciding whether you support longer hours. First identify the conclusion: the room should open for two additional hours every evening. Then identify the offered reasons: late sessions are popular, and worthwhile services should be expanded. The first is a claim about demand; the second is a general decision rule. Neither establishes that this particular expansion is affordable or better than the alternatives.

The task is not to make the proposal sound foolish. A plausible concern sits inside it: some readers may need access later in the day. Good criticism preserves that concern while checking whether the proposed action follows. A revised argument may still recommend longer hours, but for narrower reasons and under clearer conditions.

Claims, reasons and conclusions

A claim is something presented as true or acceptable. A reason is a claim used to support another claim. A conclusion is the claim that the argument is trying to establish. These are roles within a piece of reasoning, rather than permanent labels attached to particular sentences. “The room is full” could be a conclusion drawn from a headcount, then become a reason for opening another room.

Look for words such as “because,” “therefore” and “so,” but do not rely on them mechanically. “The room was quiet because it was closed” offers an explanation of an accepted event. “The lights are off, so the room is probably closed” offers evidence for a conclusion that remains uncertain. The same subject can support different reasoning tasks.

OpenStax’s Introduction to Philosophy, Chapter 5 summary distinguishes premises from conclusions and separates an assessment of their truth from an assessment of the inference between them. That distinction provides a useful starting vocabulary. The examples and exercises below are original teaching cases.

When reconstructing an argument, write the conclusion in one sentence before collecting every interesting detail. Background can matter without functioning as evidence. The room’s founding date, wall colour and founder’s enthusiasm do not automatically support a proposal about this year’s evening timetable.

A first reconstruction

Our original proposal can be written as three numbered statements. This makes its structure visible without making it correct.

  1. The existing late sessions are popular.
  2. Every worthwhile service should be expanded.
  3. Therefore, the reading room should open for two additional hours every evening.

There is a missing bridge between popularity and worthwhileness. There is another missing bridge between expansion in general and this specific timetable. Even if we add “popular services are worthwhile,” the argument still has not selected two hours on every evening over other possible expansions.

A careful reconstruction makes these bridges explicit and marks them as assumptions. It does not silently insert whatever premise would rescue the preferred conclusion. The speaker may accept a modest premise such as “strong unmet demand is a reason to consider a trial” while rejecting the much stronger premise “all popular activities must expand indefinitely.”

This is why an argument map should remain answerable to the person’s actual position. If clarification is possible, ask what they mean. If it is not, distinguish the words on the page from your proposed interpretation. A fair reconstruction improves understanding; an invented reconstruction merely gives you an easier opponent.

Truth and validity answer different questions

Consider a fictional catalogue with this rule: every item marked R can be borrowed for reference-room use only. Item 17 is marked R. Therefore, Item 17 can be borrowed for reference-room use only. If both premises are true and their terms remain consistent, the conclusion follows. The reasoning leaves no case in which both premises hold but the conclusion fails.

That structural property is deductive validity. It does not tell us whether Item 17 really carries the mark, whether the catalogue is current or whether someone copied the rule incorrectly. Those are checks on the premises. A deductively sound argument combines valid reasoning with true premises.

Now change the first premise to “every book has exactly ten pages” and the second to “this dictionary is a book.” The conclusion “this dictionary has exactly ten pages” follows from those premises, even though the general premise is false in ordinary life. The example shows why validity is not a compliment meaning that every part of an argument is reliable.

The reverse mistake also occurs. A person can reach a true conclusion by poor reasoning. “This book is useful because its cover is blue” might accidentally select an excellent book. The book’s usefulness does not establish that cover colour was a good reason for the judgement. We must evaluate the route as well as the destination.

The countermodel test

To test a proposed deduction, ask whether you can describe a possible case in which all its premises are true and its conclusion is false. Such a case is a countermodel to the inference. You are testing what the premises guarantee, not guessing what usually happens.

Suppose the room has the rule “If a workshop is full, its waiting list is open.” We observe that a waiting list is open and conclude that the workshop is full. A countermodel is easy to construct: the organiser also opens waiting lists in advance of a booking launch, when places remain available. The rule still holds for full workshops, yet the observed open list does not guarantee fullness.

The mistake is reversing a one-way condition. “Full implies open waiting list” does not mean “open waiting list implies full.” To establish the reverse direction, we would need an additional rule stating that a waiting list opens only when the workshop is full. That added premise changes the argument and should be inspected rather than smuggled in.

A useful countermodel preserves the original premises. Saying “perhaps full workshops sometimes have no waiting list” challenges the rule itself; it does not show that the inference fails while the rule is true. Both criticisms might be useful, but they attack different parts of the reasoning.

Necessary and sufficient conditions

In our fictional workshop, being full is sufficient for an open waiting list under the stated rule: fullness guarantees that result. An open waiting list is necessary for fullness under that same rule: a full workshop without one would violate the rule. Neither statement says that the two conditions are equivalent.

Try a different example. A complete application is necessary for consideration for a reading award. That means an incomplete application cannot qualify for consideration under the rule. It does not mean that every complete application wins an award. Completeness gets the application across one boundary; quality, eligibility and judging may introduce others.

The phrase “only if” deserves particular attention. “An item enters the exhibition only if its provenance is documented” makes documented provenance necessary for entry. It does not make provenance sufficient. An item with excellent documentation may be too fragile, irrelevant to the theme or unavailable for loan.

When everyday language feels slippery, use two concrete questions: Could the first condition be present without the second? Could the second be present without the first? Answering them often exposes a hidden reversal more clearly than memorising terminology. Keep the stated context fixed while you answer.

All, some, none and most

“All evening visitors want longer hours” is a universal claim. One evening visitor who does not want longer hours is enough to refute it, provided that the person really belongs to the stated group and the response measures the relevant preference. Ten enthusiastic supporters cannot protect the universal claim against a genuine exception.

“Some evening visitors want longer hours” is an existential claim. One genuine supporter establishes it. Finding one opponent does not refute it, because supporters and opponents can coexist. “No evening visitors want longer hours” is refuted by one genuine supporter. The same observation has different force against different claims.

“Most evening visitors want longer hours” concerns a proportion greater than half. One opponent does not refute it. We need information about the group and its distribution of preferences. Likewise, “longer hours usually increase attendance” allows exceptions; one unsuccessful evening does not automatically defeat the claim, although it may suggest an important condition.

Before searching for counterexamples, underline the quantity word. Then preserve its scope. “Every person who attended Tuesday’s session answered the survey” is not the same as “every library member answered the survey.” A perfectly accurate headcount can become misleading when a conclusion quietly changes the population.

An exception can improve a rule

Suppose someone says, “Every difficult book is unsuitable for beginners.” A beginner who benefits from a difficult book with strong guidance is a relevant counterexample. We should not conclude that every difficult book suits every beginner. That would replace one excessive generalisation with another.

A more useful revision is: beginners may need support when a book assumes unfamiliar vocabulary, background knowledge or methods. Difficulty alone is insufficient to decide suitability. The revised claim identifies mechanisms that can be examined: what the book assumes, what the reader knows and what support is available.

Notice what makes the exception informative. It identifies a missing condition, guided support, rather than merely scoring a point. A counterexample can lead to a narrower rule with greater practical value. It can also reveal that the original categories were too broad to support a useful generalisation.

However, do not protect every failed claim by adding a new exception after the event. If “all popular services should expand” becomes “all popular services should expand except those that should not,” the rule has lost its decision value. A revision should identify conditions that someone can recognise before the outcome is known.

Probable support is still support

Many everyday decisions cannot wait for a deductive guarantee. A month of attendance records, several interviews and a limited budget may support a trial without proving that it will succeed. Evaluate such reasoning by the relevance, quality and breadth of its evidence, and by whether the conclusion admits the remaining uncertainty.

Imagine that eight of ten observed late sessions were full. This is evidence of pressure on those sessions. It does not tell us whether a new session on another evening will attract the same readers. The observed period might include examinations, a special event or unusually wet weather. Those possibilities are questions to investigate, not automatic reasons to discard the observations.

A proportionate conclusion might be: “The recorded sessions justify testing an additional evening during a comparable period.” A disproportionate conclusion would be: “The room will always be full if we open every evening.” The second adds a time horizon and breadth that the observations do not supply.

Association and competing explanations

Suppose attendance increased after the room introduced a new recommendation board. The sequence is compatible with the board helping, but sequence alone does not establish the cause. Perhaps school examinations began that week, a nearby room closed or the opening hours changed at the same time.

Write down at least one serious alternative explanation and ask what evidence would distinguish it from your preferred explanation. If the recommendation board mainly helps new visitors find suitable books, we might expect changes in those visitors’ browsing experiences. If a neighbouring closure drives the increase, visitor accounts and the timing of that closure may be more informative.

This approach is stronger than saying “correlation is not causation” and stopping. That phrase identifies a limitation but does not improve the investigation by itself. Specify the possible mechanism, the competing mechanism and the observation that would matter to their comparison.

Some alternatives will remain unresolved. A small community project may reasonably run a modest, reversible trial while gathering better evidence. The conclusion should then describe a decision under uncertainty. It should not relabel an unresolved causal claim as a demonstrated fact because action is needed.

Facts and values in the opening-hours case

Evidence that readers want later access does not by itself establish that the room ought to provide it. A recommendation also depends on priorities: access, staff workload, affordability, fairness across different users and the purpose of the service. These value judgements should be visible so that disagreement can address them honestly.

Consider two people who agree on every attendance figure. One favours later hours because evening access helps readers with daytime commitments. The other favours earlier weekend hours because families with young children would benefit. Their disagreement may concern whose unmet need should receive priority, rather than a failure to understand the numbers.

A useful discussion separates shared observations from disputed priorities. Ask what minimum service each option preserves, what trade-off it creates and what information might change a participant’s view. “More people prefer my option” may be relevant, but it is not automatically decisive when the options affect access and burdens differently.

The lesson is not that facts are powerless or that all values are interchangeable. It is that a recommendation should identify both the evidence about likely consequences and the reasons for treating those consequences as important. Hiding either part makes the argument harder to assess.

Building a stronger proposal

Here is a more careful fictional proposal. “During the four observed weeks, eight of ten late sessions reached their seating limit. Several visitors reported that daytime commitments prevented earlier attendance. We should test one additional two-hour evening session for four weeks, provided it fits the agreed staffing budget and preserves the existing weekend service. The trial should record attendance, unmet demand and staff workload before any permanent extension is considered.”

The revised proposal narrows the action, specifies conditions and names evidence needed for the next decision. It still rests on assumptions: the observation period is relevant, the additional evening is usable by the intended readers and the staffing arrangement is feasible. Those assumptions are now easier to inspect.

The evidence does not prove that the trial is the best possible use of resources. A competing proposal might produce greater benefit at the same cost. The argument becomes stronger when it compares a serious alternative, such as improving booking arrangements or changing the timing of an existing session.

This is also an example of matching commitment to evidence. A short trial requires a different level of confidence from a permanent year-long staffing commitment. Lowering the initial commitment does not remove the need for reasons; it changes which uncertainties are tolerable at that stage.

Writing the objection fairly

A weak objection says, “People who want longer hours do not care about staff.” That attacks a presumed attitude and ignores the proposed budget condition. A stronger objection says, “The trial may still displace preparation time that the staffing budget does not record. We need a workload estimate including setup, closing and follow-up.”

The stronger objection names a specific omitted cost and explains why it matters. It can be answered with evidence or a change in design. The reply might shorten the session, rotate duties or decide that the trial is not feasible. None of those responses requires accusing either side of bad motives.

A fair reply also avoids changing the original claim. If someone objects to opening every evening, answering that “one trial evening is inexpensive” defends a different proposal unless the change is acknowledged. Revision is valuable, but it should be labelled so that participants know what is now under discussion.

When preparing your own paragraph, write the best objection in terms its supporter could recognise. Then answer its strongest relevant point. A response to an exaggerated or irrelevant objection may sound decisive while leaving the real difficulty untouched.

Practice: identify the reasoning task

For each example, first decide whether the problem concerns a premise, an inference, a scope change or a value judgement. More than one issue can occur. Try the questions before reading the next section.

  1. “Every visitor in our three-person interview liked the new timetable. Therefore, every library member likes it.”
  2. “If a book belongs in Collection A, it has a green label. This book has a green label, so it belongs in Collection A.”
  3. “Some readers prefer printed maps. I found a reader who prefers digital maps, so that claim is false.”
  4. “This activity is popular, so it deserves all of next month’s activity budget.”
  5. “Every archived letter has a recorded date. Here is an archived letter whose date is unknown.”
  6. “Attendance rose after we moved the chairs. Therefore, moving the chairs caused the increase.”

Write an improved conclusion for two examples. Do not merely weaken every statement with “maybe.” Explain what the available evidence does establish. Precise limitation is more useful than vague hesitation because it tells the reader which part of the claim survives.

Practice answers with commentary

Question 1: The interview describes the three participants. The conclusion changes the group to all members and replaces a small observation with a universal claim. A defensible report states that all three interviewees liked the timetable and explains how they were selected. Broader support needs broader evidence, not a more emphatic adjective.

Question 2: The inference reverses a one-way condition. A green label could also mark books in Collection B. That possibility preserves both stated premises while making the conclusion false. If a separate, accurate rule says that only Collection A uses green labels, the argument gains a new premise that may justify the conclusion.

Question 3: A digital-map supporter can coexist with printed-map supporters. The observation does not refute “some.” A single genuine printed-map supporter would establish the original claim. To refute it within a bounded group, we would need to establish that no member of that group prefers printed maps.

Question 4: Popularity supplies one consideration. Allocating the entire budget requires a decision rule about competing activities, opportunity costs and priorities. A useful revision might recommend considering a larger allocation while comparing alternatives. It should not pretend that a popularity measurement contains the whole budget decision.

Question 5: This is a potential counterexample to the universal premise. Check that the item is an archived letter and that “recorded date” means the same thing in both statements. An accession date is not necessarily the letter’s creation date. If the terms align, the universal statement needs correction.

Question 6: The sequence suggests a hypothesis, but other changes might explain the increase. Compare the timing of events and look for evidence about the proposed mechanism. An improved conclusion states that attendance rose after the rearrangement and that its contribution remains to be established.

A longer exercise: revise the paragraph

Read this fictional draft: “Our survey proves that everyone needs evening access. Seventy per cent of the people who answered supported it. Opening later is therefore the only fair choice. A nearby club extended its hours and became more popular, so our room will have the same success. Anyone who disagrees is ignoring the evidence.”

The draft has several separate problems. Seventy per cent is not everyone. People who answered are not automatically the whole intended population. Fairness requires an account of competing needs. The club comparison may omit differences in users, activities and resources. The final sentence treats disagreement as a personal failing rather than addressing the objection.

A stronger version is: “The survey shows support for evening access among the respondents, although we need to check who participated and who was missed. This result gives us a reason to consider an evening trial. Before choosing it, we should compare the needs it serves with those served by the current timetable and check the full staffing cost. The nearby club provides a possible comparison, but we need to establish which features of its experience apply here.”

The revision remains useful because it identifies a possible action and the next evidence needed. It does not reduce the argument to a list of doubts. It also leaves room for someone to support the goal of wider access while proposing a different way to achieve it.

Change the conditions and decide again

Now add three new fictional facts. The additional evening would require cancelling one existing weekend session. The evening survey mainly reached current late-session visitors. A room nearby already offers later access, but its available seats and suitability for these readers have not been checked.

These facts change the argument. The trial now redistributes access rather than simply adding it. The survey’s recruitment may emphasise one group’s preferences. The nearby room creates an alternative worth investigating, but its existence does not prove that it meets the same need. Each fact modifies a particular premise or comparison.

A reasonable response is to pause the original timetable proposal long enough to compare affected groups and the nearby option. Another reasonable response might approve a smaller trial if a new staffing arrangement preserves weekend access. What would be unreasonable is to repeat the original conclusion unchanged while treating the new information as irrelevant by definition.

Write a decision in four sentences: current evidence, important uncertainty, proposed next action and condition for reconsideration. Then underline the phrase that explains why the new information matters. If you cannot identify it, your revised paragraph may not actually incorporate the changed conditions.

A delayed task in a different setting

Return tomorrow without rereading the worked answers. A fictional study group says, “All useful revision uses flashcards. Our strongest student uses flashcards, so everyone should use them for every subject.” Identify the universal claim, the evidence offered and the leap to the recommendation.

A worked response would note that one successful user does not establish that flashcards are necessary for every useful revision activity. A carefully solved unfamiliar mathematics problem could be a counterexample to the universal claim. The strongest student may also use other methods, and different learning tasks may require different forms of practice.

The improved recommendation should connect method to purpose. Flashcards may suit retrieval of particular facts or terms, while explanation, writing and problem solving need additional work. The point of the exercise is the structure of the argument; it is not a claim that this fictional student demonstrates the effectiveness of any study technique.

Choose a real paragraph from something you are reading. Preserve its source and context, identify the conclusion, list its explicit reasons and mark any premise you have supplied yourself. Then write one serious alternative interpretation and one observation that would affect your judgement. This produces a small, inspectable piece of work rather than a vague verdict that a source is good or bad.
