Wait, What? Plants Do Not “Eat” Sunlight
Light is not food. Light energy is one required input that allows green plants to produce sugar during photosynthesis when water and carbon dioxide are also available.

This distinction matters because it separates the energy input from the food product.
1. The Current Primary 6 Core
The current Singapore Primary Science syllabus asks learners to investigate the requirements for photosynthesis: water, light energy and carbon dioxide, with sugar and oxygen as products. It also recognises the Sun as our primary source of light and heat energy.
This page owns the light-requirement evidence job. It does not own detailed leaf anatomy, chlorophyll biochemistry, rate equations or advanced photosynthesis practical design.
2. Why Light Matters
Photosynthesis uses light energy to drive the production of sugar from water and carbon dioxide. Without sufficient light, the process cannot continue normally.
The scientific claim is not merely “plants like sunlight”. The stronger claim is that light energy is a required input for the food-making process.
3. A Better Question: What Evidence Would Distinguish the Models?
Suppose two competing ideas are proposed:
- Model A: light is required for photosynthesis.
- Model B: light makes no difference to photosynthesis.
A useful experiment must hold other important conditions as constant as possible while changing light exposure. The observation should then test whether the food-making evidence differs.
4. Worked Investigation — One Leaf, Light vs Covered Region
A classic school investigation covers part of a leaf so that one region receives light and another does not, while both remain on the same plant under otherwise similar conditions. After suitable preparation, a starch test can be used as indirect evidence of sugar production and storage.
- Keep the leaf attached to the same plant.
- Cover one region so light does not reach it.
- Leave another region exposed.
- Allow sufficient time under suitable conditions.
- Test both regions for starch using the standard teacher-led method.
- Compare the evidence.
If the illuminated region gives stronger starch evidence than the covered region, that supports the conclusion that light is required for photosynthesis under the test conditions.
5. Why the Experiment Needs Controls
If two entirely different plants are compared, differences in size, health, water supply or leaf age may confuse the result. Using different regions of the same leaf can reduce some of these confounds.
- Keep plant species and leaf as similar as possible.
- Control water availability.
- Keep carbon dioxide availability similar.
- Keep exposure time similar.
- Change only light access where possible.
6. Light Is Required Does Not Mean More Light Is Always Better
A simple Primary experiment can show that light is required. It does not automatically prove that doubling light always doubles photosynthesis.
At deeper levels, photosynthesis rate can be limited by several factors, including light, carbon dioxide, temperature and plant condition. That rate-analysis job belongs beyond this page’s core.
Requirement evidence ≠ unlimited dose-response rule.
7. Plants Still Respire
Photosynthesis makes sugar. Respiration releases usable energy from food. Green plants do both.
This is why the statement “plants need light to get energy directly for every life process” is incomplete. Light supports photosynthesis; respiration releases usable energy from food for cellular work.

- Turn the word equation into an input-process-output diagram.
- Hide one input and predict the process outcome.
- Turn a covered-leaf setup into variables: changed, measured, controlled.
- Given a starch result, state the supported conclusion and one limit.
- Connect sugar production to respiration without merging the two processes.
