Wait, What? A Raincoat Can Be Flexible and Waterproof at the Same Time
A good raincoat must move with your body, but it must also stop water from being absorbed through the material.
Primary 3 goal: understand waterproofness as a material property, compare materials fairly, and explain why waterproof materials are useful for particular purposes.
1. The Singapore Primary Science Anchor
Primary 3 Science includes waterproofness among the physical properties used to compare materials.
The current MOE syllabus describes a material as waterproof when it does not absorb water.
2. Waterproof Is Not the Same as “Water Rolls Off”
A surface may cause droplets to bead up, but the important Primary-level question is whether water is absorbed into the material.
So the observation should focus on whether the material becomes wet through absorption under the chosen test conditions.
3. Why Waterproofness Matters
- Raincoats should keep water from soaking through.
- Umbrella material should resist water absorption.
- Food packaging may need to keep moisture away from the contents.
- Outdoor covers may need to protect objects from rain.
- School bags may benefit from water-resistant or waterproof outer materials depending on the design.
The right material depends on the purpose. Waterproofness may matter greatly in one object and hardly at all in another.
4. A Fair Waterproofness Test
- Use similar-sized samples.
- Place the same amount of water on each sample.
- Wait for the same amount of time.
- Observe whether water is absorbed into or through the sample.
- Record the result using the same criteria.
If one sample receives much more water or is tested for much longer, the comparison becomes less fair.
5. Worked Example: Paper, Plastic and Fabric
Suppose equal-sized samples of paper, plastic sheet and cotton fabric each receive the same number of water drops.
The paper and cotton may absorb water while the plastic sheet does not absorb the water under the test conditions.
A stronger conclusion is: “The plastic sheet was more suitable for keeping water out in this test because it did not absorb the water.”
6. Waterproofness Is Only One Property

7. Evidence Gate
Do not call a material waterproof because it “looks shiny” or because water rolled off once. Use the absorption evidence from a fair test.
8. What Can Confuse the Test?
- Different sample thicknesses.
- Different amounts of water.
- Different test durations.
- Coatings on only some samples.
- Holes, seams or damage in an object even when the material itself resists absorption.
This last point matters: the performance of a whole object can depend on its construction as well as the material.
9. Common Misconceptions — and Repairs
- “Shiny means waterproof.” Appearance alone is not evidence.
- “Waterproof means strong.” Waterproofness and strength are different properties.
- “Fabric is never waterproof.” Fabrics can be made or treated in different ways; test the actual material.
- “Plastic is always best.” Suitability depends on the object’s full set of requirements.
- “One drop proves everything.” A useful comparison needs consistent conditions and clear criteria.
10. Safe Investigation
Use small amounts of clean water, trays or towels to catch spills, and keep electrical equipment away from the test area. Do not test unknown chemicals or waterproofing sprays.

13. How to Say It in a Science Answer
Weak: “Plastic is good because it is waterproof.”
Stronger: “The material did not absorb water during the test, so its waterproofness makes it suitable for an object that needs to keep water out.”
14. What Mastery Looks Like
- Beginning: recognises that waterproof materials do not absorb water in the test.
- Developing: compares samples under the same conditions.
- Secure: connects waterproofness to an object’s purpose.
- Strong: distinguishes material waterproofness from whole-object leakage caused by seams, holes or damage.

Primary 3 focuses on whether materials absorb water and how that property affects their uses. Contact angle, surface chemistry, membrane technology and industrial waterproofing standards are enrichment beyond this lesson.
