Wait, What? A Young Grasshopper Is Already Grasshopper-Shaped
A young grasshopper is called a nymph. It resembles the adult in overall body form, but it is smaller and not yet fully developed.
Primary 3 goal: recognise the grasshopper life cycle as egg → nymph → adult and compare it accurately with insects that pass through larva and pupa stages.

The grasshopper is one of the animal life cycles used in Primary 3 Science. Its pattern is especially useful for comparison with the cockroach, butterfly and beetle.

3. Stage 1 — Egg
The life cycle begins with eggs. Different grasshopper species lay eggs in different places and arrangements, but those details are not the main P3 job.
The important idea is that the egg comes before the young nymph emerges.
4. Stage 2 — Nymph
A grasshopper nymph already has the general body plan of a grasshopper. It grows through several moults before becoming an adult.
- It is smaller than the adult.
- Its wings and reproductive structures are not yet fully developed.
- It becomes more adult-like through growth and moulting.
- There is no pupa stage.
5. Stage 3 — Adult
The adult grasshopper is fully grown and can reproduce. Reproduction connects the adult stage to the next generation of eggs.
6. Why Nymph Is the Key Word
The word nymph tells you that the young stage resembles the adult more closely than a larva resembles its adult form.
Grasshopper: nymph. Butterfly and beetle: larva.

A grasshopper nymph does not become a new broad life-cycle stage after every moult. Several moults can occur while the organism is still classified broadly as a nymph.

- “All young insects are larvae.” Grasshoppers have a nymph stage.
- “All insects have a pupa.” Grasshoppers do not.
- “The nymph is just a tiny adult.” It is an immature stage and is still developing.
- “Every moult creates a new named stage.” Several moults occur within the broad nymph stage.

Photographs, videos and teacher-prepared specimens are sufficient. If observing live grasshoppers outdoors, avoid harming or unnecessarily handling the animals.
