Wait, What? Mushrooms Are Not Plants?
A mushroom grows from the ground. It does not walk around. It may look more like a plant than an animal.
But fungi are not plants. Bacteria are another broad group of living things, and most bacteria are far too small to see without a microscope.
Primary 3 goal: recognise fungi and bacteria as broad groups of living things, distinguish them from plants and animals at a simple level, and use observable evidence carefully instead of relying on appearance alone.
1. The Singapore Primary Science Anchor
In the Primary 3 Diversity topic, learners classify living things into broad groups. Besides plants and the familiar animal groups, the syllabus also names fungi and bacteria.
At this stage, the job is not to learn advanced taxonomy or microbiology. The job is to understand that the living world contains more than plants and animals.
2. What Is a Fungus?
Fungi are living things. Familiar examples include mushrooms, moulds and yeast.
- A mushroom is a fungus.
- The fuzzy growth on old bread may be mould, which is also a fungus.
- Yeast is a fungus used in processes such as bread-making.
Fungi do not make food by photosynthesis in the way green plants do. Many fungi obtain nutrients from other material around them.
3. What Is a Bacterium?
Bacteria are very small living organisms. A single one is called a bacterium; more than one are bacteria.
Many bacteria are microscopic, so a child cannot decide that bacteria are absent just because none can be seen with the unaided eye.
Bacteria occur in many environments. Some are useful to humans and ecosystems, while some can cause disease. Primary 3 does not require a detailed study of bacterial types.
4. Why Appearance Can Mislead You
A mushroom may be rooted in one place, but that does not make it a plant. A bacterium may be invisible to the naked eye, but that does not make it non-living.
Classification should use more than one useful characteristic, not one quick visual guess.

6. Evidence: How Do We Know They Are Living?
At Primary 3, learners use a cluster of characteristics when thinking about living things. Living things grow, need resources, respond to their surroundings and reproduce.
A fungus can grow and reproduce. Bacteria can grow in number and reproduce under suitable conditions. These are living processes even when the organism looks unfamiliar.
7. A Better Classification Test
- Do not classify from one clue alone.
- Ask what characteristics have actually been observed or given.
- Compare those characteristics with the grouping rule.
- If evidence is missing, say what additional observation would help.
This is stronger Science than saying, “It looks like a plant, so it is a plant.”
8. Worked Example: The Mystery Growth on Bread
A slice of bread is left in a damp place. After several days, fuzzy patches appear and become larger.
A weak answer is: “The bread became dirty.”
A stronger answer is: “The fuzzy patches may be mould, which is a fungus. The increase in the size of the patches is evidence of growth under suitable conditions.”
9. Common Misconceptions — and Repairs
- “Mushrooms are plants.” Fungi are a separate broad living group.
- “All bacteria are harmful.” Bacteria have many roles; some are useful and some can cause disease.
- “If I cannot see it, it is not alive.” Many living organisms are microscopic.
- “All fungi are mushrooms.” Mushrooms are only one familiar form of fungus.
- “One clue is enough to classify.” Good classification uses clear criteria and relevant evidence.
10. Safe Observation
Do not ask children to grow unknown moulds or bacteria at home. Unknown microbial growth should not be opened, touched, smelled closely or tasted.
For Primary Science, photographs, prepared classroom materials and teacher-supervised observations are sufficient for classification learning.

Stronger: “The growth is consistent with mould, a fungus. It increased in size over time, showing growth, which is a characteristic of living things.”

- Developing: recognises bacteria as a broad living group even though most cannot be seen unaided.
- Secure: distinguishes fungi from plants and animals at an appropriate Primary level.
- Strong: uses multiple characteristics and evidence rather than appearance alone.
15. Singapore Curriculum Boundary
Primary 3 requires broad recognition and classification. Cell structure, fungal phyla, bacterial shapes, metabolism, antibiotics and detailed microbiology belong beyond this lesson unless clearly labelled enrichment.
