PSLE Science becomes reliable when the student can route the right evidence into the right kind of answer.
The revised 2026 paper contains two very different response environments. Booklet A asks the student to distinguish among plausible options. The revised 2026 PSLE Science format
SEAB lists Science under subject code 0009 as a revised paper for 2026.
- Booklet A: 30 multiple-choice questions, 2 marks each, 60 marks.
- Booklet B: 10–11 structured questions, 2–5 marks each, 40 marks.
- Total: 100 marks.
- Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Requirement: all questions in both booklets are compulsory.
The examination is based on the 2023 Primary Science syllabus and assesses knowledge with understanding together with application and scientific inquiry.

Booklet A: discrimination, not guessing
Multiple-choice Science is often misread as the “easy” half because the answer is already printed on the page.
In reality, Booklet A creates a discrimination problem. Several options may sound scientifically familiar. The student must decide which one fits the evidence and conditions exactly.
A useful MCQ routine is:
- What is the question actually testing?
- Which diagram label, observation or condition is decisive?
- Which option is scientifically true but irrelevant?
- Which option contains the common misconception?
- Which option would require evidence the question never supplied?
The strongest MCQ review does not stop at “B is correct”. It asks why C was attractive.
That is often where the misconception lives.
Booklet B: explanation needs visible structure
Structured questions place the burden of construction on the learner.
A correct keyword is not enough if the relationship remains invisible.
We often test the response against a simple chain:
Evidence → Relevant scientific relationship → Consequence
For more complex questions, another layer may be needed:
Changed condition → Evidence → Scientific relationship → Effect on the system → Consequence
The point is not to memorise a sentence template. It is to ensure the reasoning route is complete.
Scientific inquiry: the method determines what can be concluded
The 2026 assessment objectives explicitly include application and scientific inquiry.
This means students may need to interpret or analyse information, evaluate observations or methods, make predictions, and communicate explanations and reasoning.
We ask:
- What was changed?
- What was measured?
- What other conditions should remain comparable?
- What does the pattern actually show?
- Does the method test the stated question?
- What conclusion is justified?
- What conclusion would be too strong?
Scientific inquiry is not an add-on chapter. It is the logic that decides whether the evidence can carry the conclusion.
Mixed-topic recognition: the chapter heading is gone
Topical practice provides a hidden support: the student already knows the family of concept being tested.
PSLE questions remove that support.
The learner may need to recognise whether the decisive model concerns:
- energy transfer or transformation;
- forces and their effects;
- material properties;
- heat or light behaviour;
- living structures and functions;
- cycles or processes;
- experimental variables;
- several of these interacting in one system.
A student who succeeds after one small hint may not have forgotten the Science. The missing capability may be recognition.
Evidence integration: one answer can depend on several representations
A PSLE question may distribute information across a written description, labelled diagram, table and graph.
Students often read these sequentially but fail to reconstruct them as one evidence system.
We train an integration routine:
- What does the text establish?
- What additional information does the diagram add?
- What variable or trend does the table show?
- Which source changes the interpretation of another?
- What scientific model explains all the evidence together?
This reduces the chance that the learner answers from only the most visually obvious part of the question.
Time: do not let one difficult item consume the evidence-processing budget
One hour and forty-five minutes is enough only if decision quality remains stable.
Students can lose time in several ways:
- re-reading without identifying the question job;
- debating two MCQ options without returning to the decisive evidence;
- writing excessive structured answers because they are unsure where the causal chain ends;
- over-investing in one unfamiliar system while leaving later questions rushed;
- checking by rereading everything rather than targeting known risk points.
Useful speed comes from classification and evidence discipline, not from writing faster.
Answer length: stop when the scientific job is complete
Some students lose precision because they believe more Science must be safer.
But an answer can become weaker when it introduces unrelated facts, alternative mechanisms or claims the evidence never asked for.
We teach one stopping rule:
“Has the evidence been connected to the relevant relationship and consequence?”
If yes, extra material needs a reason to remain.

- Inquiry: variables, controls or method are misunderstood.
- Inference: the conclusion goes beyond what the evidence supports.
- Explanation: the causal chain is incomplete.
- Timing: a correct untimed process becomes unstable under examination conditions.
“Weak in Science” is too broad to guide a final-year repair.
Why three students matters
Three students can choose the same wrong MCQ option for different reasons.
One may hold a misconception. Another may ignore a diagram label. A third may know the concept but over-generalise from a familiar example.
Likewise, three structured answers may contain the same keyword while failing at different points in the causal chain.
The small group allows those reasoning routes to remain visible. Peer contrast becomes diagnostic without letting individual misconceptions disappear inside a larger class.

- MCQ distractors are rejected for explicit scientific reasons;
- mixed-topic recognition becomes faster;
- students identify the changed and measured variables more reliably;
- diagram, table and text evidence are integrated before answering;
- structured responses contain clearer causal chains;
- answers stop once the scientific job is complete;
- claims stay within what the evidence supports;
- timed performance becomes closer to untimed scientific understanding.
What parents can do tonight
- For one wrong MCQ, ask why each incorrect option is wrong.
- Ask the child to point to the decisive evidence before naming the topic.
- Ask what was changed and what was measured in an inquiry question.
- Ask whether the explanation contains evidence, relationship and consequence.
- Ask which part of the question came from the diagram, table or text.
- Keep marked papers and group errors by mechanism rather than total score.
A useful parent question is: “Did you send the right evidence into the right scientific answer?”
