The PSLE English Comprehension Paper 2, as set by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB), assesses several key language skills that are crucial for mastering English. These include:
- Reading Comprehension: This is a central component of the paper. Students are provided with various types of texts—such as narratives, expositions, and visual texts—and are expected to read and understand them. This includes grasping the main ideas, details, sequences, and relationships within the texts.
- Interpretation and Inference: Beyond simply understanding what is explicitly stated, students must also be able to interpret meaning from the text. This involves drawing inferences from the information provided, understanding implicit ideas, recognizing the author’s intentions, and understanding the emotions and motivations behind characters’ actions in narratives.
- Vocabulary in Context: Students should demonstrate an understanding of a broad range of vocabulary and be able to use context to discern the meanings of unfamiliar words or phrases.
- Grammar: The paper assesses the students’ knowledge of English grammar rules and their ability to apply these rules correctly.
- Analytical Skills: Especially in the Visual Text Comprehension section, students must demonstrate their ability to analyze and interpret both textual and visual elements to understand the messages being conveyed.
- Critical Thinking: The paper also assesses students’ critical thinking skills. This involves evaluating the ideas presented in the texts, forming and supporting opinions, and making connections between different parts of a text or between different texts.
By designing the paper to assess these skills, the MOE and SEAB aim to equip students with a solid foundation in the English language that can support their future academic and professional endeavours.
