A mission may require launch, propulsion, power, navigation, communication, crew support, ground systems, recovery or science operations. Architecture asks how these capabilities fit together.

• Which functions are essential?
• Which capabilities depend on others?
• What can be reused?
• Where are the major interfaces?

The architecture should serve the mission, not become the mission.
