PSLE Science Language Specialist | Vocabulary, Meaning & Booklet B Expression

Scientific vocabulary matters in PSLE Science, but not because marks are awarded for sprinkling “keywords” into an answer.

A scientific word is useful only when it carries the correct model, relationship or process.

The language chain

Word → scientific meaning → relationship → evidence → explanation.

If a student knows the word but not the relationship, the vocabulary is only a label. If the student understands the relationship but cannot express it precisely, the Science may be correct internally but still fail to convert into marks.

Vocabulary has three different jobs

Why “use more keywords” can fail

Consider two answers:

Answer A: “Because of heat, evaporation, temperature and water.”
Answer B: “The water gained heat and evaporated, so the amount of liquid water decreased.”

Answer A contains more scientific-looking words, but the relationship is unclear. Answer B uses fewer terms while showing the mechanism.

Keywords are not the engine. They are compressed labels inside a correct explanation.

Booklet B requires visible reasoning

Under the revised 2026 PSLE Science format, Booklet B contains structured questions. The useful conversion pattern is:

Relevant evidence or condition → scientific mechanism → resulting change or conclusion.

Vocabulary should make each link more precise; it should not replace the links.

How to learn Science vocabulary properly

  1. Attach the word to a model. Do not learn “condensation” as a definition only; connect it to gas changing to liquid under suitable conditions.
  2. Attach the model to evidence. Ask what would be observed if the process were occurring.
  3. Change the representation. Move between a word, diagram, table, experiment and written explanation.
  4. Contrast near-neighbours. Pollination vs fertilisation; heat vs temperature; observation vs inference.
  5. Use the word in a complete causal explanation.
  6. Remove the cue. Test whether the learner can retrieve and use the word without being shown the chapter heading.

A useful three-student language exercise

Give all three students the same Booklet B question. Before showing any model answer:

  • Student A explains orally.
  • Student B identifies the evidence.
  • Student C writes the shortest complete scientific explanation possible.

Then rotate roles. This exposes whether the bottleneck is understanding, evidence selection, scientific vocabulary or written conversion.

What parents should not optimise for

  • Long vocabulary lists with no scientific relationships.
  • Model answers memorised word-for-word.
  • “Magic keywords” presented as guaranteed marks.
  • Answers made longer simply to sound more scientific.
