GP Vocabulary by Theme: Science and Technology

GP science technology vocabulary is useful when students can describe how knowledge is produced, how technology is deployed, who benefits, what risks are created and what institutions govern uncertain outcomes. A strong General Paper essay does not need to sound like a laboratory report. It needs language for evidence, innovation, regulation, risk, access, ethics, expertise, uncertainty and social change.

Students searching for GP science technology vocabulary, science and technology essay words, AI vocabulary, biotechnology vocabulary or GP technology phrases often collect topic nouns but miss the verbs and evaluative terms that make an argument work. “AI is advancing rapidly” is descriptive. A GP paragraph asks what capability is improving, what evidence exists, which tasks are affected, how risks are distributed, what regulation can realistically do and whether the benefits justify the costs.

The current H1 General Paper syllabus 8881 identifies science and technology as one of the broad issue areas candidates may draw on, while requiring analysis, evaluation, synthesis and clear communication. This page builds a cross-topic vocabulary system for AI, digital platforms, scientific research, medicine, biotechnology, data, automation and emerging technologies. Use it with the General Paper Vocabulary List and the SEAB A-Level syllabus listings.

The four layers of a science-and-technology argument

1. Capability

What can the technology or method actually do? Avoid discussing social impact before identifying the capability precisely.

2. Adoption

Who can access it, at what cost, through which institutions and with what infrastructure? A laboratory capability may have limited real-world adoption.

3. Impact

What outcomes follow for productivity, safety, inequality, privacy, employment, health, environment or culture? Distinguish measured effects from predictions.

4. Governance

What rules, standards, accountability mechanisms or professional norms are needed? Regulation should respond to a defined risk rather than fear of novelty alone.

The Fencing Method: science-and-technology distinctions

evidence / proof

Evidence can support a conclusion without establishing it with absolute certainty; proof is a stronger claim. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

uncertainty / ignorance

Uncertainty can be quantified or bounded even when knowledge is substantial; ignorance means relevant knowledge is absent. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

invention / innovation

Invention creates something new; innovation includes developing, applying or diffusing ideas in useful new ways. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

automation / AI

Automation performs processes with reduced human intervention; AI is a broader family of computational capabilities and may or may not automate the entire task. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

accuracy / reliability

Accuracy concerns correctness; reliability concerns consistent dependable performance. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

efficacy / effectiveness

Efficacy often concerns performance under controlled conditions; effectiveness concerns real-world performance. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

risk / hazard

A hazard is a potential source of harm; risk includes likelihood and consequence in context. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

privacy / security

Privacy concerns appropriate control over personal information; security concerns protection against unauthorised access or damage. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

regulation / governance

Regulation is one formal tool; governance includes wider rules, institutions, norms, oversight and accountability. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

augmentation / replacement

Augmentation supports human capability; replacement substitutes for a human role or task. Build a GP example in which confusing the two changes the evaluation.

How to write about AI without writing the same essay

AI is not one single capability. A useful paragraph specifies the task: generate text, classify images, predict demand, support diagnosis, automate scheduling or recommend content. The social consequences differ because the workflow, error cost, human oversight and affected groups differ.

Avoid claims such as “AI will replace humans”. Stronger language asks which tasks can be automated, which occupations contain those tasks, what complementary skills become more valuable and how quickly organisations can adopt the technology. This turns a slogan into analysis.

How to discuss scientific uncertainty

Scientific knowledge often includes uncertainty, confidence intervals, model limitations or incomplete evidence. This is not a weakness that automatically makes all conclusions equally uncertain. GP students should distinguish “the evidence is uncertain” from “nothing is known”.

Useful evaluation asks whether uncertainty is material to the decision. If a possible harm is severe and irreversible, policymakers may reasonably act before every uncertainty disappears. In other cases, premature regulation may impose costs without sufficient evidence. The decision depends on stakes, reversibility, evidence strength and available alternatives.

How to discuss regulation

Regulation should be tied to a defined failure: safety risk, privacy harm, monopoly power, misleading claims, lack of accountability or external costs. Saying “technology needs regulation” is incomplete until the student identifies what rule, who enforces it and what trade-off follows.

A useful regulatory paragraph can compare prescriptive rules, performance standards, licensing, audits, transparency requirements, liability, competition policy or controlled testing environments. Not every problem requires the same tool.

How to discuss access and inequality

Technology can lower costs at scale while still excluding users who lack devices, connectivity, skills, language support or institutional access. This is why “available online” does not automatically mean “accessible”.

Strong GP vocabulary names the barrier: affordability, infrastructure, digital literacy, accessibility, trust, interoperability or distribution. Once the barrier is named, the essay can evaluate whether the technology narrows or widens inequality.

Frequently asked questions

Do GP students need technical expertise?

No. They need enough conceptual understanding to make accurate arguments and examples.

Can I memorise one AI essay?

It is risky. Questions change, and AI itself covers many different applications and trade-offs.

How should students use scientific studies?

Accurately and cautiously. Avoid inventing numbers or presenting one study as universal proof.

Is uncertainty a reason to avoid conclusions?

No. Students can make qualified judgements that reflect the strength and limits of evidence.

Should technology essays always include regulation?

Only when governance is relevant to the specific risk or market failure being discussed.

How do I avoid vague words such as ‘advanced’?

Name the capability, performance dimension or institutional change that actually improved.

What is the best revision method?

Theme reading plus vocabulary retrieval and paragraph writing across different technologies.

What shows mastery?

The student can analyse an unfamiliar technology using evidence, adoption, impact and governance language.

Final principle

Science and technology vocabulary should help a GP student move from excitement or fear to analysis. Ask what the system can do, how widely it can be adopted, what evidence exists, who bears the risk, who gains access and what governance is proportionate. Those questions remain useful even when the technology changes.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
