The English work that helps a Primary 1 student is not the same work a Primary 6 student needs. The language develops in layers: reading accuracy, vocabulary, sentence control, comprehension, writing, oral communication and examination execution. Primary 1: build confidence with words and sentences

The first priority is making English usable. Students need accurate reading, basic sentence formation, familiar vocabulary and enough confidence to speak and write complete ideas.

Primary 2: increase fluency and control

Students begin to read longer passages, use more varied vocabulary and notice grammar patterns more reliably. Writing moves from individual sentences toward connected ideas.

Primary 3: comprehension and composition become more deliberate

Students need to track sequence, identify relevant details and explain simple relationships in a passage. Composition begins to require clearer planning and paragraph purpose.

Primary 4: connect skills across tasks

Vocabulary, grammar and reading should now support one another. Students learn to infer more, choose words more precisely and organise writing with greater control.

Primary 5: prepare for complexity

Texts become denser and writing expectations rise. We focus on comprehension accuracy, stronger sentence construction, more selective vocabulary and the ability to sustain a composition from beginning to end.

Primary 6: PSLE readiness and independent performance

By Primary 6, several skills need to operate together under time pressure. Students must read carefully, retrieve meaning, plan efficiently and control language well enough to express what they mean.

Revision therefore moves between targeted skill repair and mixed examination practice.

What we diagnose

A low English mark does not tell us enough. We want to know whether the main problem is reading, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, writing, oral expression or exam execution.

The teaching changes once the cause is clear.
