What does the Oral Communication component consist of?

Current 2026 answer: PSLE English Paper 4 Oral Communication carries 40 marks and 20% of the subject assessment. It contains Reading Aloud (15 marks) and Stimulus-Based Conversation (25 marks). This page previously displayed the superseded pre-2025 Oral structure and has been corrected in place.

Reading Aloud

The goal is intelligible meaning, not theatrical performance. Pronunciation, articulation, phrasing, pace, emphasis and recovery after a stumble all matter because they affect what the listener understands.

Stimulus-Based Conversation

The stimulus is a starting point for conversation, not a script prompt. A strong pupil answers the question directly, gives a reason, supports it with a specific example or experience, explains the connection and adapts when the examiner follows up.

What practice should look like

Read unfamiliar passages aloud and explain the passage’s tone before performing it.
Use fresh photo stimuli rather than rehearsing one answer bank.
Change the question family: personal experience, preference, community impact, fairness or improvement.
Record short responses and diagnose content separately from delivery.
Fade sentence starters and adult prompts as independence improves.
