What are the topics covered in PSLE English?

As a language examination curated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB), the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) English syllabus is designed to assess students’ ability to express, interpret, and understand complex ideas, feelings, and information in both spoken and written English.

The PSLE English examination covers a comprehensive set of skills and topics, notably subdivided into various components including Paper 1 (Writing), Paper 2 (Language Use and Comprehension), Listening Comprehension and Oral Communication.

In Paper 1, students are tasked with writing both a situational and continuous piece. The former focuses on the application of functional language skills, with prompts often set in familiar, everyday contexts. The latter tests students’ ability to express personal thoughts, ideas and experiences in a coherent, structured and engaging manner. Here, students are assessed on their creativity, content development, language use, and grammar.

Paper 2, also subdivided, begins with a grammar cloze passage followed by vocabulary questions (synthesis and transformation, and vocabulary cloze). These components focus on the application of grammar rules, vocabulary and syntax. Reading comprehension follows thereafter, consisting of a variety of text types, testing students’ inferential, literal and evaluative comprehension skills.

The Listening Comprehension component requires students to extract specific information, infer meaning, and understand the speaker’s intent, feelings or attitudes from a variety of spoken texts such as announcements, conversations, and talks.

The Oral Communication component is composed of reading aloud and a stimulus-based conversation. In the reading aloud portion, students are required to read a short passage with good pronunciation, articulation, and expression. The stimulus-based conversation section tests students’ ability to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings based on a visual stimulus.

Each of these components contributes to a comprehensive coverage of English language skills, aiming to instill in students the ability to use English effectively in different contexts, express thoughts and ideas clearly, and develop a life-long interest in the English language. As such, preparing for the PSLE English examination involves not just understanding these topics and components, but also honing a holistic set of language and communication skills.
