Primary 3 Vocabulary: What It Is (Almost-Code Definition)

0) Definition Lock

  • Primary 3 Vocabulary (P3V) = the minimum reliable word+chunk system a child can use under time pressureto:
    • understand passages (Paper 2),
    • write clear sentences (Paper 1 SW),
    • write coherent stories (Paper 1 CW),
    • explain ideas in Science/Math word problems.
  • Unit of mastery is not “word known”.
    • Unit = word → meaning → correct usage → chunk → sentence → transfer.

1) Scope Lock

  • Target outcome: P2→P3 reliability (stable output under exam load).
  • Coverage domains:
    • Story core: feelings, actions, conflict, consequence, moral/learning
    • School life: teamwork, responsibility, routines
    • Nature + city: weather, places, movement, safety
    • Comprehension verbs: infer, explain, compare, conclude (age-safe)
  • Vocabulary types:
    • Core words (high frequency)
    • Power words (precision + tone)
    • Chunks (collocations + sentence starters)
    • Connectors (because, although, however, meanwhile…)

2) System Model

  • Input: reading aloud + short passages + picture prompts
  • Processing: meaning locks + chunking + retrieval practice
  • Output: speaking → sentence → paragraph → composition
  • Feedback: error log + rubric + teacher/parent signals
  • Repair: targeted micro-drills + rewrite loop

3) Phase Reliability (P0–P3)

  • P0: recognizes some words; cannot use them correctly.
  • P1: can define; usage often awkward/incorrect.
  • P2: can use in guided sentences; breaks under pressure.
  • P3: uses naturally in writing + comprehension; holds under time.

4) Drift & Failure Trace

  • Drift condition = “words are memorized but don’t appear in writing.”
  • Failure mode trace (schematic)
Weak chunks → slow retrieval → short repetitive sentences → poor clarity → marks drop

5) FenceOS Rule for P3 Vocabulary

  • Fence Trigger when any is true:
    • Writing repeats the same 5–10 words
    • Child hesitates >3 seconds for common words
    • Comprehension: “I don’t know” spikes
  • Fence Action (do not add more words):
    • compress to 30–50 core words + 30 chunks
    • drill output (sentences) daily 10–12 minutes
    • weekly timed paragraph

6) Minimum Viable P3 Vocabulary (MV-P3V)

  • 50 Core words + 30 Chunks + 12 Connectors
  • Mastery requirement: 3 correct sentences/word across 3 different contexts

7) Parent Operator Checklist (2 minutes)

  • Ask: “Use responsible in a sentence about school.”
  • Ask: “Replace nice with a better word.”
  • Ask: “Add because/although to improve the sentence.”
  • If child freezes → Fence repair loop (Article 3).
